It is and egg-dipped ham and cheese sandwich or an unusual combo of French toast and the basic of ham and Swiss sandwich. There are many versions out there but our recipe today is made of following ingredients:
bread – cheese – ham – mustard – mayo – mixture of eggs and milk
If you are wondering when to eat this sandwich the answer is simple. Monte Cristo sandwich is for any time of the day. Can be your breakfast, lunch or dinner. Also, this is great idea for Sunday brunch or lazy Friday night when you want to stay inside and just watch TV. The sandwich is made in no time. Super fast and so easy.
Now, to make this sandwich in your house you need to buy the following ingredients.
SHOPPING LIST FOR EASY SANDWICH
- bread
- ham
- cheese (Swiss cheese or cheese you like)
- mayo
- mustard
- eggs
- milk
- salt and black pepper (if you like)
EQUIPMENT NEEDED
-shallow bowl
-non-stick frying pan or cast-iron (whatever you have at home)
ACTION TIME
Easy Monte Cristo Sandwich
Ingredients
4 slices of bread
2 eggs
1/4 cup milk
4 slices ham
2 slices cheese (or you can use 4 slices of Swiss cheese or cheese you like)
salt and pepper to taste
oil for frying
INSTRUCTIONS FOR Making Easy Monte Cristo Sandwich
Add eggs, milk, salt and black pepper into a shallow bowl.
Beat all ingredients until well combined. Set aside.
Lightly grease a small skillet or pan over medium heat.
Spread the mustard on 2 of bread slices.
Add 1 slice of cheese and 2 slices of ham.
Optional: Top ham with another slice of cheese
Then spread the mayonnaise on remaining 2 bread slices.
Close the sandwiches with 2 slices of bread with mayo-side down.
Dip each sandwich into egg/milk mixture to coat on both sides.
Transfer to the pan with hot oil and cook until golden brown on the bottom.
Flip the sandwich carefully using the flat spatula and continue cooking on the other side until golden brown.
Slice and serve.
Optional: Dust with icing sugar just before serving if you like. (I don’t like using icing sugar)
Quick Note
Bread – use white of whole wheat
Cheese – you can use Swiss, Provolone or Gouda cheese.
Eggs – use large, organic and fresh eggs.
Mustard – this is my favorite mustard. I love, love this mustard. On top of that you get free glass.
