Mama’s Biscuits!
So, you know why it went viral? When you see the word Mama’s and Grandmother’s in one video…you know it has to be the best homemade recipe. Ever.
If you haven’t try this recipe I am going to share my experience with it.
So, let’s start.
For this recipe you need only 4 ingredients.
They are:
- self-rising flour
- Crisco shortening
- buttermilk
- butter
So, recipe is super simple and very easy to make. In case you don’t have self-rising flour or buttermilk, I am going to teach you how to make it in your kitchen. Cheap, easy and fast.
The first question is..
How to make self-rising flour?
Ingredients
2 cups flour (all purpose)
1 TBSP baking powder (no aluminum)
1 tsp salt
Instructions
Add flour, baking powder and salt into a small bowl.
Whisk all ingredients together and you just made self-rising flour.
Congratulations!
Use immediately or store in an airtight container.
Making Buttermilk
Ingredients
1 cup milk
1 TBSP white vinegar, lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
Instructions
Pour 1 cup milk into small bowl or a liquid measuring cup.
Add 1 TBSP of vinegar and quickly stir using a wooden spoon.
Let it sit for 10 minutes at room temperature.
After 10 minutes: You just made the best homemade buttermilk. (and you saved money)
Now, if you have homemade buttermilk and self-rising flour you are ready to make the best homemade biscuits.
In your kitchen.
FIRST OPTION – Making Mama’s Biscuits BY HAND
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups self-rising flour, plus 1/3 cup for dusting
1/3 cup Crisco shortening
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted (don’t use margarine)
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 425 F.
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Set aside.
Combine flour, Crisco shortening and buttermilk in your large mixing bowl.
Stir until well combined. Be sure to mash shortening into the flour and buttermilk.
Then add 1/3 cup of flour to a baking pan, dump the dough into the pan and knead together. Pat it out to about 3/4 inch thick.
Your next step is to use biscuit cutter (or cookie cutter or glass) and make 8 biscuit rounds.
Transfer them to prepared baking sheet.
Spoon melted butter over the top of each biscuit.
Bake at 425 F for 12 minutes.
IMPORTANT: For golden brown top, broil the biscuits for 1 to 2 minutes.
Remove from oven, top with more melted butter and enjoy.
Serve with sour cream, garlic, eggs and ham. (or anything you like)

How to make Mama’s Biscuits using KitchenAid Mixer?
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups self-rising flour, plus 1/3 cup + 1/4 cup for dusting
1/3 cup Crisco shortening
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted (don’t use margarine)
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 425 F.
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Set aside.
Add the following ingredients to your mixing bowl: flour, Crisco shortening and buttermilk.
Using your stand mixer on low mix until all ingredients are combined.
Switch out the paddle attachment for your dough hook attachment.
Add 1/3 cup of flour and mix until the dough comes together.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured board.
Knead for a second.
Pat it out to about 3/4 inch thick.
Your next step is to use biscuit cutter (or cookie cutter or glass) and make 8 biscuit rounds.
Transfer them to prepared baking sheet.
Spoon melted butter over the top of each biscuit.
Bake at 425 F for 12 minutes.
IMPORTANT: For golden brown top, broil the biscuits for 1 to 2 minutes.
Remove from oven, top with more melted butter.
Enjoy while still hot.
Sweet options: Raspberry jam or your favorite, Nutella spread and whip cream…Yes, I know.
My favorite option: With best fried egg and Italian Parsley. (Optional: Add tomatoes, red peppers, spinach…)
